Voyaging through southeastern Wyoming weaves history and natural splendor. From the fort echoes of Fort Laramie National Historic Site to forest whispers of Medicine Bow National Forest, each step along this path unveils treasures of the past and the beauty of Wyoming.
| OFF THE BEATEN PATH
Wyoming is primarily known for Yellowstone National Park but nestled far from the bustling crowds that make their way to Yellowstone National Park each year, the tranquil vastness of Medicine Bow National Forest beckons with a pristine allure that remains untarnished by the masses. This expansive forest unfolds across the picturesque terrain of the Medicine Bow Mountains and the Snowy Range, offering a captivating array of landscapes that seamlessly transition from lofty alpine meadows to secluded and densely wooded enclaves.
Within the confines of this natural sanctuary, a wealth of recreational possibilities stands ready to be explored, each one more enticing than the last. For the intrepid adventurer, the options are virtually endless, whether it’s embarking on invigorating hikes along meandering trails, creating a temporary haven in the tranquil embrace of a clearing for a night of camping under the stars, or casting lines into the shimmering waters of pristine lakes. And for those who find solace in quietly observing the intricate ballet of wildlife, the forest grants opportunities to witness the graceful dance of nature’s inhabitants.
For those who yearn to uncover the secrets of this pristine haven from the comfort of their vehicles, the illustrious Snowy Range Scenic Byway emerges as a true jewel among the less-trodden paths. This captivating route guides travelers on a journey that delves deep into the heart of the forest. As we embarked upon this fascinating expedition, a panorama of unparalleled grandeur greeted us at every turn. Majestic mountains, adorned in an ever-shifting palette of hues, stand tall like steadfast sentinels. At the same time, serene lakes mirror the boundless skies above, creating a spellbinding tableau that irresistibly captivates the senses.
A standout vantage point to soak in the breathtaking expanse of the region can be found at the elevation of 10,806 feet, nestled within the welcoming embrace of Sugar Loaf Campground. This idyllic spot rests at the foot of Sugar Loaf Mountain, providing an unrivaled panoramic perspective.
However, Sugar Loaf Mountain diverges from the conventional image of a typical mountain. Rather than adhering to the classic pyramid-like form that characterizes the mountains of Routt National Forest further south in northern Colorado, Sugar Loaf boasts a distinctive dome-shaped profile crafted from solid rock. This unconventional structure only adds to its allure, as it stands as a testament to nature’s artistry and geological ingenuity.
In its uniqueness, Sugar Loaf Mountain does not conform to the norms, yet it remains equally, if not more, awe-inspiring. Its soaring dome and the rugged texture of its rock composition combine to create a captivating scene, commanding attention and inviting contemplation. From this vantage point at Sugar Loaf Campground, visitors are granted the privilege of gazing upon a vista that captures the landscape’s grandeur and the subtle intricacies that define its character. It’s an invitation to witness a natural marvel that stands as a harmonious contradiction, a symphony of forms and features that blend to create a view unlike any other.
Both Medicine Bow National Forest and Rout National Forest present an ideal haven for photographers seeking to capture nature’s splendor. While not as sprawling as Yellowstone National Park, Medicine Bow offers greater accessibility, making it a convenient choice for photography enthusiasts.
During our visit to the forest, we were treated to several captivating sights, including the majestic presence of bull moose, a charming encounter with a Pine Martin, and a lively array of bird species, including Hummingbirds. These delicate creatures were ubiquitous, flitting from one wildflower-laden meadow to another, providing a photographer possessing patience opportunities to craft extraordinary images. Whether through the imposing elegance of wildlife or the delicate vibrancy of flora, Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest unfolds as a haven where every shutter click can transform a moment into an everlasting masterpiece.
| FOOD, FUN & LODGING
A noteworthy destination to consider is Albany Lodge, situated at an elevation of approximately 8,000 feet and south of Snowy Range Ski Lodge which offers a distinct experience away from the main route of the Snowy Range Scenic Byway, which provides an avenue for mountain exploration via snowmobiles during winter and side-by-side vehicles in the spring and summer months. It’s worth noting that renting vehicles, especially side-by-sides, can have a significant price tag. Snowmobile rentals are more budget-friendly, likely due to their maintenance costs.
| A WORD OF CAUTION
While Albany Lodge boasts an inviting bar offering a variety of adult beverages, there is room for a major improvement in its kitchen. It’s advisable to exercise caution regarding specific menu items. For instance, when ordering a $35.00 entrée, we were treated to an undercooked bacon-wrapped steak that was severely overpriced.
The bacon was not cooked and sent one person flying to the bathroom after having only one bite. We recommend avoiding entrée selections entirely, as they can significantly mar your dining experience. Instead, opt for appetizers when frequenting the bar or dining area, as many of these offerings are pre-cooked or deep-fried. Even with appetizers, it’s wise to carefully assess the readiness of your meal to avoid any potential disappointments.
Avoid trying to organize a wedding reception or making an advance reservation for a party at Albany Lodge, as their consistent understaffing is often used as a justification for delivering inadequate service.
If you want to avoid finding undercooked bacon on your plate, there is another popular dining location. Not far from Snowy Range Ski Lodge is the small town of Centennial, WY, a busy haven for travelers at all times of the year. Several restaurants serve good food at reasonable prices. A few bed and breakfasts dot the town, but the most popular place to stay is the Mountain View Hotel & Cafe. It’s reasonably priced, offering clean rooms, comfortable beds, and easy access. We highly recommend it.
In essence, the Medicine Bow National Forest extends an invitation to experience a retreat into the unspoiled wilderness, a realm where the ceaseless clamor of daily life surrenders to the whispers of nature and the breathtaking splendor of the great outdoors. It’s a sanctuary for those who seek solace and rejuvenation amidst the embrace of unaltered landscapes and those who yearn to savor the exquisite and irreplaceable beauty that defines this hidden gem.
